    The Missing Letter...

    Ben Eine X Fluorescent Smogg

'"The Missing Letter" cast concrete sculpture edition'

We all know Ben Eine as the man who loves letters, those slanty, straight or curvy characters that permeate our world, our consciousness, on which modern civilisation is partly built. Letters have clout – artistically, culturally, politically, historically. And while you may or may not have noticed that Eine’s alphabet canvases sometimes omit the letter ‘W’ – their grid layout leaving no room for odd numbers – this exclusive second sculpture release from the artist, produced by Fluorescent Smogg, proves that there’s no love lost.
‘The Missing Letter’, hand-cast in concrete and available in four colourways and one seductive special edition, lavishes attention on the alphabet’s 23rd character – a symmetrical symbol that is both aesthetically and phonetically pleasing, that’s admirable for reasons beyond being the chemical element sign for tungsten and the only letter name with more than one syllable. Stand back, take stock: the letter ‘W’ just always looks good. So now is your chance to place one in your collection.
It may be the Ancient Greeks, the Romans or the Phoenicians we have to thank for creating the alphabet and bringing us the letter ‘W’ in the first place, but Ben Eine now brings it to bold, brilliant, three-dimensional new life.
Fluorescent Smogg unveils its second collaboration with artist Ben Eine releases a limited edition hand cast concrete sculpture, The Missing Letter” available in 4 unique colourways plus a hand finished special edition.
    Description:

    Xenz

'Theres Love if you Want it'

    From the artist.

"Graffiti has developed my fascination with birds.

It's an unusual progression but until you look at their mating rituals, then you see how style and flamboyance is so important and a link appears. The colour range of spraypaint is expanding constantly and coupled with an increasingly competitive scene, I needed an alternative approach to stand out. I wanted to add a bit of love and something sweet to stand out from the often aggressive nature of urban art. So much of my throw up has become a simple line of birds. My studio work focuses on their habitats be that urban or deep jungles everywhere I go I'm looking for graffiti and birds.

This print captures all of that."

FAMILY JEWELS -A Pin Badge Collectors Set-

A fantastic gift for anyone beaten down by the stresses of watching the moon pass by on rollerskates. We decided to make ourselves some pin badges that really express the current mood reflected within some of our favourite artists. In this set you will find an emotional Gasius “Dawg” pampering itself in tears while Mudwig freeze frames a “Smurf” getting some mild decapitation therapy, and Petros “Bunt Rabbit” exudes an act of power -almost shakespearean. Meanwhile Horphe provides the collectors out there with an animal which he didn’t have a name for yet. Enjoy

'Putins Orange Cardinal Commemorative Stodge Disc'

Building on the queasy tradition of politicized ceramics, Mudwig pays homage to a dreamt but not delivered commission from Vladimir Putin's Grey Cardinal. Commemorating the numerous Soviet canine experiments that almost certainly did not happen between 1915-2015, the piece contrasts stark formalist sans-serif fonts & sharp graphic symbols with the bio-anatomical imaginings of the Mudwig. The Pilgrim

    Russell Maurice x Fluorescent Smogg

    'The Pilgrim'

The Pilgrim - Forever searching, he got pretty bashed up on his travels.
Fluorescent Smogg are proud to present an exhibition of new works to celebrate the launch of a new Bronze edition “The Pilgrim” by Russell Maurice.
Like many of his objects, Maurice’s 20cm Bronze cast of a bindle (a stick and fabric bundle bag) initially emerged from an Alchemic symbol. This then travelled through his cosmiche comic treatment… and came out walking.
But wait. What's Castle gray skull doing here? Is it Kitsch? Or just a reference to 80's cartoons?
The Pilgrim is not alone. He stands amidst other tearful creatures, set within a landscape of otherworldliness:- Still still-lives, bits of bits of Coral. Fulgurite Golems. Bleached smurf bottle stoppers. Old boots. Gravestones. Candlesticks. Lightning... Somewhere on his journey.
The Pilgrim shows Maurice’s continuing use of the ragged, the scrappy, of cut-out offcuts not just clean canvases: more hobo than highbrow. But what might seem like a slippery slope towards Pop Art is in fact a continuation of the mystical and pan-psychic themes of birth, death and rebirth: The continuation of the themes that preoccupy Maurice’s current art practice. The use of the Comic, though, retains some tongue in cheek.

    'Where Were You before Now'

A limited wooden sculpture edition carved from a solid piece of purpose charred sustainably harvested Honduran Cedarwood, housing both screen printed copper and hand finished inlays. The edition also includes a handmade book comprised of lino cuts, original works and risograph pages which capture the artist's abstract and literal references within her project with Fluorescent Smogg.

    Size (Sculpture) - (D) 40cm x (H) 2cm

    Size (Booklet) - 12 Pages 15cm x 21cm / Lino cut 46cm x 46cm

Edition: 20 hand finished by the artist.

Authenticity: Signed and numbered by the artist

Fluorescent Smogg is pleased to present a new limited edition and site-specific installation by British artist Lucy McLauchlan. ‘Where Were You Before Now’ looks at the relationship between apparent fragile states and the strength they embody beneath the surface. This duality is apparent throughout her practice when the murals fade or are painted away, the image has gone but the strength of the memory remains.

Taking her natural environment as inspiration, McLauchlan continues themes rst explored in her 2014 London solo exhibition ‘Marking Shadows’. Tracing the contours and surface of the landscape, the artist allows environmental factors to both inspire and in!uence the way in which she works. McLauchlan’s practice often entertains long-lasting permanent materials, allowing for a certain immediacy and pace within her distinctive mark making. For this show the installation inside the gallery will see the entire walls painted using a combination of fragile, delicate materials that wouldn’t necessarily last the test of time outdoors.

In addition to the new installation Fluorescent Smogg is thrilled to release a series of exclusive limited editions created alongside the artist. The new body of editions was inspired largely by an ancient Japanese architectural process of burning wood to strengthen it. The simple act of burning would appear to weaken the wood but in fact it does the opposite, providing strength and protection. Each of the nely crafted editioned pieces embody this duality of fragility and strength which is considered through the materials and processes employed.

Each limited edition of 20 is comprised of a Sculpture, Booklet and a Linocut print. The Sculpture has been carved from a solid piece of Honduran Cedarwood, housing a screen printed copper inlaid into the charred surface. The Booklet captures abstracted and literal references of the process and collected markings that informs this site specific installation. The Linocut print reflects the way these initial hand painted brush marks have been transferred into the carved wood. Each edition is hand finished and printed by the artist.

    Zosen

'The Tree OF Life (print edition)'

A fine art edition of 20 x 4 colour screen prints that have each been individually hand finished by the artist. Printed on 280gsm Somerset smooth stock and measuring 55cm x 76cm, signed and numbered by the artist.

“El arbol de la vida” (The Tree Of Life) reviews the iconography of popular roots from Latin America and the influence on the author.

Zosen expands a mythological bestiary of planetary signs crossed by irony and tradition.

Emerging from the graffiti scene and after contemporary art, Zosen shares similar sensibilities as the local artisans of popular culture and folklore that flows between the differences of Europe and Latin America.

He represents an imaginary influenced by the mass media, individual reflection and life in the city or interaction with nature; while commenting on cultural and social aspects of his origins.

He takes “El árbol de la vida” from the christian culture to transform it with his visual language into something else, stripping it of religious meaning and turning it into a psychedelic trip to the rhythm of cumbia.

After twenty-five years of action in the streets, Zosen has become part of the distinctive visual landscape of graffiti and murals of Barcelona. The city recognizes his familiar imagery, colorful, somewhat nostalgic for mass culture.

    Daniel Sparkes (Mudwig)

    'The SeussIan Rock Drill'

Edition of 13 etchings on heavyweight cotton rag paper, with four deckled edges, hand finished with gold foil and beeswax.

"Sparkes inhabits the space between reality and illusion, between popular culture and scientific investigation, and creates a world in which everything is spliced, impaled and dissected. His treatment of each subject, be it a desolate landscape, a stranger’s face or a panting animal, is linear; each must have a layer stripped away and another created, and each must have its own complex interior exposed. It is, as Sparkes has said himself, “a fraudulent science”. To an extent he also plays with the idea of our disconnection with nature through, for example, portraying animal butchery as an idealistic cartoon scenario. In a world so preoccupied with superficial banality, Sparkes’ work, although initially appearing tongue-in-cheek, brings with it a more robust message of the conflict between the natural and mechanical worlds."

    Xenz

    'Moon on a Stick'

‘Moon on a Stick’ is the super limited titled edition of a site-specific showcase of meditative work by London-based artist Xenz called “The Moon On A Stick”. The edition is a hand-crafted Fluorescent Smogg x Xenz Portfolio containing 4 monotone prints, using a variety of screen printing techniques on 300 gsm Fabriano smooth paper (deckled edges). Includes a hand painted original.

The showcase presents a new series of focused monochromatic illustrations and marks a brief departure from the artist’s vibrant idiosyncratic style. The peculiarities of our ever-evolving landscape continue to inspire the city native, with the exhibition coinciding with the May full moon and emergence of a new season. Xenz extends his line of enquiry to explore the effects the lunar cycle has on various natural elements surrounding us, including the water and tides as well as our own involuntary and habitual responses. The hand-finished body of work was inspired by wildlife courtship rituals and innate survival instincts, drawing stark similarities between that of our natural environment and humanistic tendencies. The reflective painter displays a confident array of distinctive mark-making within each piece, confidently smearing and retracting paint to leave impressionistic markers reminiscent of Asian art influences.

Xenz’s opulent wildlife scenes are replaced with a stripped-back colour palette, creating arresting compositions that highlight our post-industrial landscape with dreamlike execution. Bridging the gap between graffiti and decorative fine art, Xenz’s work is both grounded in the present and provides a welcome escapism from contemporary routine. The contemplative artist addresses themes of identity, relationship, success and competition increasingly associated with modern life, and presents a pensive look at the current state of things.

Alongside ‘Moon on a Stick’ a hand finished 6-colour screen print edition titled ‘Super Moon’ will also be released. The multifaceted print release will be accompanied by a unique site-specific takeover of the Barcelona project space, extending ideas intrinsic to the print’s development and incorporating a series of unique artworks. A limited run of black and white show posters will also be available to purchase exclusively on the opening night.

'Paranoia on Paper' - The Sequel

“We are polar opposites. He is a weight lifting, marijuana ingesting doughnut with a Staffordshire bull terrier and I am a fragile stick wizard” - Sickboy on his unconventional union with Word To Mother, 2014.

Fluorescent Smogg is pleased to announce the launch of Paranoia On Paper The Sequel, a collaborative, site-specific installation and exclusive print release from UK natives Sickboy and Word To Mother. The Barcelona-based project space will feature a unique, multi-disciplinary showcase from the graffiti duo, expanding on an idiosyncratic visual language and combined vocabulary developed over the past 5 years. The one-off event will present distinctive sketches and artist paraphernalia alongside signature, hyper-coloured cartoons and works in-situ.

Paranoia On Paper The Sequel follows the subversive pair’s hugely popular Paranoia on Paper, a collectors box set offering a rare insight into the artist’s private work and paying homage to a mutual addiction to sketching. The upcoming release this November continues in a similar vein, comprising limited edition fine art giclees, with spot varnish and screen print finishings, available in both ‘baked’ standard and special editions. Fluorescent Smogg promotes an uprising in quality and creativity, ensuring every item is produced to the highest standard and all prints are authenticated, signed and dated by both artists.

The inaugural artist-led project will open exclusively for launch and then subsequently by appointment only, with remaining editions available to purchase online and original works on display in the gallery window until the New Year. The free opening event hopes to unite like-minded people across a multitude of practices and disciplines, encouraging challenging and dynamic collaborative projects with both emerging and established international artists.

    UNGA (Broken Fingaz)

    'Fat Bart'

Edition of 20 signed and numbered screen prints on heavyweight Fabriano stock, deckled on the bottom edge. Measures 50cm x 70cm with glow in the dark eyes.
Founded in 2001, multidisciplinary art collective Broken Fingaz (Kip, Unga, Tant and Deso) are regarded as one of the first graffiti crews to emerge from Haifa, Israel, and their name is now at the forefront of contemporary street art.
With their independent approach and shared appreciation of illustration, the BFC's success has been unprecedented. In over a decade working together, they are renowned for their unique style, inspired by the peaks and troughs of life, everyday ephemera, old comic books, 80's skateboard graphics and neo-psychedelia amongst many other things. Starting out painting on the street and designing posters and graphics for local venues, the BFC's work encompasses graphic design, painting, film and installation.
Elucidating the importance of their contributions to the shape of the contemporary scene, the BFC's work was presented at exhibitions in Israel's most important visual arts institutions: the Tel Aviv Museum (2011) and the Haifa Museum of Art (2010). Since then they have exhibited widely outside Israel. In 2012 they presented their debut international solo exhibition in London (The Old Truman Brewery, 2012) with shows following in Vienna (Inoperable, 2012), Paris (Lebenson Gallery, 2012), Amsterdam (The Batallion Gallery, 2013) and Berlin (Urban Spree, 2013). In 2013 they were also invited to participate at Cut Out Festival, Queretaro, Mexico, where they produced a new stop-motion graffiti film.
Their public murals can also be seen on the streets of cities across China, Japan, Cambodia, Israel, UK, Germany, Holland, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, France, Spain, Mexico and more.
In the press, the crew are regularly featured in art magazines including Juxtapoz, Complex and VNA. Accolades from national and international newspapers about the BFC's work include "the vitality and spirit of street art" (Evening Standard, UK), "successful arts collective...not everyone has their talent" (The Independent, UK).
